Why the southeast is the classical preference

A cluttered, poorly lit, or chronically messy kitchen is treated as undermining the room's function regardless of its directional placement. Good ventilation, adequate lighting, and a decluttered counter near the stove are Vastu-positive changes available in literally any kitchen, rented or owned.
What to prioritize if you can only change one thing
If a full kitchen renovation is not on the table, prioritize the stove's immediate surroundings: reduce direct alignment with water sources, keep the area around it clear and clean, and make sure the cook is not working with their back to the main kitchen entrance if it can be avoided.
